There is No Real Change without Transition and yet many people struggle Navigating the Valley of Transition! Francis Myles
And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him. 3 And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither. 4 And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him. 5 And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt? Mark 11:2-5, KJV
Everybody and everything goes through transition. In the world of man, there is nothing as permanent and as consistent as change and yet many people in our world are unskilled at the task of grappling with change. This would explain why most people never change without pain. I know that this statement may be too difficult for some of you to accept. Nevertheless the fact of the matter is that most people have positioned themselves as resistors of change instead of embracing the possibility for corporate progress and personal development, which is inherent in all periods of transition. Where we to plot the attitudes of most people toward change, our graph would be filled with serious downside curves representing their personal struggles with the winds of change. Their serious lack of skill in navigating periods of transition would be quite evident. “For most people transition is an abstract art and subjective experience instead of being an exact and user-friendly science, which can be studied and mastered”. In this article I will endeavor to give you tested “secrets” for navigating and mastering the valley of transition, in your life. However, before I do this I want to literally take you on a Rabbit trail!
The Story of the Greedy Old Fox
A folklore store is told that will help illustrate the problems most people have with navigating the valley of transition. An old and greedy fox was walking through the forest, heading in the direction of a nearby village. Suddenly he stiffened as his gifted nostrils picked up the scent of a possible meal of prey. Lo and behold a few meters away he saw two rabbits that where skipping, along a dusty and difficult road. The old fox wasted no time going after his prey. The rabbits sensing the danger they were in dashed forward along the dusty road. The greedy, old fox chased after them huffing and puffing. He was almost catching up to them. The old-fox salivated with delicious anticipation. Suddenly the dust road split into two. The two rabbits separated and each took one of the dusty’s roads. However the greedy old fox refused to give up on the idea of killing two rabbits instead of one. So instead of chasing one of the rabbits and calling it a day, the greedy fox decided to split his legs between the two roads. He tried desperately to catch both rabbits using his new method. By so doing the greedy, old fox ended up splitting his body into half; after he refused to give up on the idea of having two delicious meals. Said in another way the greedy-old fox died “at the place where two roads meet!”
Nothing places you and I at the place where two roads come together like the force of transition. Take for instance; losing a lucrative job you had worked hard for. How would you feel? You are certainly confronted by a personal crisis at the place where two roads come together. On one hand you find yourself daydreaming about the good old days but those gone. You known intuitively that you should wipe your tears and go look for another job. How about giving birth to your first baby? Talk about transition and that is saying a lot. During moments of transition being stuck at “the place where two roads meet;” leads to a life of hopeless indecision. This is because there is a raging war between “the past we know” and the “future we do not!”
