Tapping Into the Extra Mile

And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away. Matthew 5:41-42

Ordinary is easy. You don’t even have to work hard at it. As a matter of fact you can lazy your way into ordinary and hit your target each and every time. On the other hand…. “Extra-ordinary” doesn’t come easy nor cheap, this is why its so crowded at the bottom. Few venture to pay the price for living at the “top” of the Mountain of Destiny and uncommon achievement. However it excites me that history is very kind to men and women who pay the price in the school of achievement to go the “extra-mile!” The corridors of human history is littered with the portraits of the world’s greatest achievers….who made a mark on their generation….because they lived by the principle of “going the extra mile” that Jesus is purporting in the above passage of Scripture.

Jesus knows that in our fallen nature of sin, we have the tendency to do the “least” thing, especially if doing the extraordinary “thing” comes at a higher personal cost. Imagine where we would all be if Jesus came to the Earth, did all the miracles He performed but refused to die for our sin on the Cross? We would all be living under the bondage of sin, without hope of lasting redemption from sin’s chokehold. Thank God, Jesus went the extra mile and gave His life for the redemption of all mankind. Most basketball fans know that Michael Jordan is arguably one of the best basketball players of all time. But what many  Jordan fans may not be aware of is that Michael Jordan was the first Chicago Bulls player to enter the gym and was also the last player to leave the gym. In other words, Michael Jordan went the “extra-mile” in order to be and remain the best in the world of basketball. As a result of his extra mile mentality and discipline he earned himself six NBA champions and MVPs!

Here is the Million dollar question: Are you an extra mile person or not? Prayerfully think about this before you answer. If you discover that you have been avoiding the pain of becoming an “extra-mile” thinker and person….it may explain why you are finding it crowded at the bottom. The bottom of the Mountain of Destiny or Achievement is filled with people who hide behind “excuses” and swim in the swamp of mediocrity. Lets examine the word “super-natural” for a moment. It is made up of two words “super” and “natural”. Doing  the “Natural” is the first mile…..almost every person can do this first mile…but the extra mile only happens when we engage an extraordinary God, who will then add His “Super” to our “Natural!”
